Neil Degrasse Tyson


Neil deGrasse Tyson (born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist, a science communicator, Frederick P. Rose Director, Hayden Planetarium, Rose Center for Earth and space, and a research associate at the Institute of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. Since 2006 he has hosted educational television show NOVA ScienceNOW on PBS and was a frequent guest on The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Jeopardy!. It was announced August 5, 2011, Tyson will host a new successor to Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Journey TV series.

Early Life :

Tyson was born in New York as the second of three children. His father, Cyril deGrasse Tyson, was a sociologist and human resources commissioner for New York Mayor John Lindsay. His mother, Sunchita Feliciano Tyson was a gerontologist.Tyson attended the Bronx High School of Science (1972-1976) where he was captain of the wrestling team and was editor of the Journal of the School of Physical Sciences. Tyson had a continuing interest in astronomy at an early age and studied it occupied in its adolescence, possibly even for some fame in the astronomy community by lecturing on the subject at the age of 15 years
The astronomer Carl Sagan, who was a faculty member at Cornell University, tried to recruit Tyson to Cornell at the undergraduate level. In an interview with author Daniel Simone Tyson said: "It's interesting when I applied to Cornell, my application was dripping with my passion for study and research of the universe. Somehow Admissions Office brought my application note the late Dr. Sagan, and he actually took the initiative and care to contact me. It was very inspiring and a very strong influence. Dr. Sagan was as big as the universe, an effective mentor. "But Tyson has chosen to attend Harvard University where he majored in physics. It was team member of the crew in its first year, but returned to the fight, possibly letters in his senior year. Tyson earned a BA in physics from Harvard in 1980 and began his graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned an MA in astronomy in 1983.

In addition to wrestling, rowing and college, he was active in dance styles such as jazz, ballet, Afro-Caribbean and Latin ballroom. In 1985 he won the gold medal at the National University of Texas Ballroom dancing International Latin style tournament. He began working toward a Doctor of the New Testament, but transferred to Columbia University in 1988, after dissolving his committee. at Columbia University in 1989, holds a Master of Science degree in astrophysics and in 1991 received his doctorate of philosophy in astrophysics. Tyson argued that intelligent design thwarts the progress of scientific knowledge. Tyson worked with the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and presented a talk with him about religion and science When asked whether he personally believes in a higher power, Tyson said: "Everything in a higher power that I have been described All religions that I have seen many statements are with respect to the benevolence of that power.
