Mason Rookie Receiver Performance Appearance Led To Trade, The Jets Say :
Florham Park, NJ - When Jets continued Derrick Mason in August, they offered to let him pass on Monday and Tuesday in Nashville, where his son and daughter live. It was an unusual arrangement, but the Jets felt comfortable because Mason did not have to absorb an entirely new offense.
The Jets' system similar to the Mason was learned in Baltimore under Cam Cameron, who worked in San Diego for four years with Brian Schottenheimer, Jets offensive coordinator.
Despite these similarities, Mason trouble learning the playbook. It was bench for much of the first half of Sunday's 30-21 loss to New England in favor of rookie Jeremy Kerley, and the night of Tuesday night Mason was traded to the Texans, a recognition of good intentions gone awry.
"Obviously, the field performance was not where he expected it to be or where they expected to be", said general manager Mike Tannenbaum on Wednesday.
In the meritocracy of the Jets players are evaluated for their production, not by the critical comments of the media. The timing of the operation called the perception that Mason was changed in part to say that there were "cracks" in violation of the Jets team after October 2 Baltimore loss, or because it was named in an article in the Daily News - and refuted by head coach Rex Ryan - one of the three receivers who have complained Ryan Schottenheimer offensive scheme.
Reject this theory, on Wednesday, Tannenbaum said, "This may seem a way, but we can not control that. What we can control is the best for the Jets."
Mason's decision to sign with the Jets, Jerricho Cotchery as supplanting slot receiver on the team, not Ryan, who knew their time together in Baltimore, "the happiest guy in the building." Ryan dreamed of Mason, who ranks 12th on the list with 937 career receptions, catching 80, maybe 90 passes. But in five games, he caught 13 for 115 yards going.
The Jets' offense has sputtered, with Mark Sanchez still looking for accuracy and chemistry with his receivers, who combined for 46 catches and 576 yards. However, Wes Welker New England 45 receptions for 740 yards.
Darrell asked aloud Review of Mason have been negotiated if the Jets were 4-1 instead of 2-3, because "if you're 4-1 everyone a little happier here." But he added, " Derrick Mason is not the focus of why we're here, why we have the record we have. "
The first day of the team, Mason, Ryan pointed out what appeared to be an appropriate message. He stressed the importance of best practices in the chain that led to the game against Miami on Monday night, saying: "You have to start stacking bricks on Wednesday that is not limited to pile on the day the party" .
Mason, who did not respond Wednesday to requests for comment, and sometimes did not know where to run or what the games were called. Jets, however, kept the faith. Until the call in Houston, they intended to maintain the balance in a waiting period for the offense to improve his grip. It may be the case, does the appearance of Kerley, Mason made a sacrifice.
"The best players play, and what we have always been and this is what we believe," said Ryan.
A fifth-round pick from Texas Christian, Kerley had a solid training camp coming to the station, and Mason spent last week in the depth map. Against New England, took 18 shots Kerley Mason 6, assuming the responsibilities of Mason in groups of three receivers. Kerley caught three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. Among its functions are spread not in conflict with his punt return.
Kerley learned Mason was traded via Twitter, about 22 on Tuesday. But he said: "We can not believe everything hot and uncomfortable." Half an hour later, his phone rang. It 'was Tannenbaum requires us to ask: "Are you ready to man the third place," Kerley said: "I put two and two together."
Jets could be increased, while Mason Kerley, but continue to No. 4 receiver to play special teams, like Brad Smith and Wallace Wright did, and now, Patrick Turner, is doing.
Inside the locker room, the store was greeted with a mixture of shock and quiet understanding, where players are often insensitive to turnover, which determines the NFL roster. Plaxico Burress for each - "Nothing surprises me more" - was Revis, who said: "I never believed, and a lot of other guys did not expect it, either."
Once again, Revis said he saw Shaun Ellis, Chad Pennington and let Cotchery, too, and blind to any pushing.
"Everyone in this room can be cut," said Review. "You will have to perform."
